"Putting People to Work - Working With People" is a phrase that best sums up the Human Services field, one of the fastest growing career fields in the United States today. In an age of turbulent social change, there is a definite need for the skilled human services professional. The UAA Human Services Department mission is “to prepare Human Service generalists through a competency based, community oriented program encompassing classroom and practical learning opportunities.” The University of Alaska Anchorage, Department of Human Services offers both an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Human Services, preparing students for entry level employment, and a Bachelor of Human Services (BHS) practitioners degree which prepares students to work effectively in any community based human services setting dedicated to the empowerment of clients through education, paraprofessional counseling, and human service practice. The AAS is articulated with the baccalaureate degree in a "two plus two" sequence. The program offers specialized areas in alcohol and substance abuse, disabilities, diversity issues, or family and youth. The Occupational Endorsement Certificate in Conflict Resolution is offered through the Human Services Department as well as the Minor in Addiction Studies.
